Is it too late? Will PS3 rescue Sony?

After much anticipation, Sony finally released its PlayStations3 game system in the early winter of late 2006. Sony, which used to hold nearly seventy percent of the gaming market, is currently fighting to make a comeback with this new PS3 gaming console. But the high price of five to six hundred dollars per game system really limits those who are able purchase the console.

I mean, six hundred bucks is a lot of dough to spend on your kid’s toy! Not to mention the fact that the competitor’s new game consoles that are coming out are half the PS3’s price … it has lead to some pretty intense competition.

One of the issues that Sony is facing is that they are trying to bring their Blu-ray optical technology to the entertainment industry forefront by using it in the PS3 without looking at the consequences. Sony wants to not only sell the PS3 game console, but they also want to be able to promote their Blu-Ray technology.

Here’s the problem: this Blu-Ray technology is currently competing against the high-definition technology that is far less expensive to manufacture. Not to mention that the high-definition technology has already become a more acceptable format.

It has been stated that the Sony PlayStation3 game console will not make a profit for at least two years. This is because it will take several years to pay off the huge costs of research and development that went into making the PS3. The only profit that Sony will make will be from the sale of PS3 games.

This has many Sony insider concerned as the first weeks sales showed only one PS3 game being bought per PS3 sold. Initially there were only six new games issued … and gamers were not happy about that. The high cost of the PS3 games, in the sixty to eighty dollar range, will keep most games from collecting many PS3 games.

There is hope that the PlayStation3 will rescue Sony from its current slump and carry Sony into the next decade. Some insiders believe that because the PS3 has the advanced technology, and the new computer chip will be so impressive, that consumers will be willing to pay the high price for the more advanced graphics. Several critics have come out with reviews stating that “the graphics are so clear that they are almost movie like in quality”. Click Here For More Articles About: Video Games!
