A Review Of Fight Night Round 3 PS3

If you like the Fight Night series, then you are going to absolutely love the improvements made in Fight Night Round 3. The PS3 version of Fight Night Round 3 has its own distinctive improvements over the Xbox 360 version.

The “total punch control” mechanism of Fight Night Round 3 is used in both the PS3 and XBox 360 version. This boxing mechanism takes a bit of practice to get used to as the controls are not standard. In most other boxing games, you throw punches by mashing buttons. Fight Night Round 3 is different from other game in that you throw punches by tapping the right analog stick in different degrees. For example, to throw a right jab you have to tab the stick slightly to the right. To throw a haymaker you “wind” your punch by pulling the stick back and forth in a half circle motion. Uppercuts and hooks are also thrown in very similar motions. If you are not comfortable playing like this then you can change the game controls back to the standard “button masher” style. If you change back you will be at a disadvantage when playing against someone who knows how to use the total punch control mechanism.

Another new feature in the PS3 version of Fight Night Round is the ability to throw “impact punches.” Impact punches instantly drain your opposing boxer’s health and allow you to get a rather easy knockdown. Similar to the other haymakers, this punch is quite difficult land in a fight, and it can be easily blocked. You have to be careful using this punch as it drains your.

Both the PS3 and the XBox Fight Night Round 3 version have a new added element of realism that Fight Night Round 2 simply does not have. In Night Round 3 if you throw a lot of punches you are going to wear out rather quickly … especially with heavyweight fighters. In Fight Night Round 2 you were able to throw many more punches before your boxer started getting tired. In Fight Night Round 3 if you throw very many haymakers your boxer will become worn out very quickly, and you'll become an easy knockout for your opponent.

To be effective in Fight Night Round 3, you will have to learn how to block and lean defensively. Leaning and ducking punches is rather simple … all you have to do is hold the left trigger and move the left analog stick and your fighter will lean forward or backward. Standing still (not moving around) is not a good idea unless your fighter is Joe Frazier. To move your fighter, let go of the left trigger and move the left analog stick.

Blocking punches in Fight Night Round 3 is a little more complicated then in Round 2. To block a punch, you hold the right trigger and moving the right analog stick up and down. In Fight Night Round 3, you can block punches, or ideally parry, by predicting which side you are going to get hit on, and moving the right analog stick right or left before getting hit. Parrying is a very powerful fighting method that you certainly want to take advantage of. By parrying a punch, you are allowed a brief second to get a counter-punch in. Because of the realistic nature of Fight Night Round 3, counter-punches not will only save you energy, but they also open up the opposing player for serious damage. Counter-punches will also get you more points from judges if the fight comes to decision.

Exclusive to the Fight Night Round 3 PS3 version is a game mode called “Get in the Ring.” This is a first person view mode where you get to see the fight and your opposing fighter just like a real life boxer would. It will take time to adjust to the new perspective as it looks like a real boxing match. You also have the option to play first person in any of the other modes on the PS3 version of Round 3.

This Round 3 PS3 view mode is a lot of fun after you get used to it, and it can be dizzying because it is so realistic. This cool view mode will probably be used in future boxing games other than Fight Night Round 3 for PS3.

Another significant improvement in the PS3 version of Fight Night Round 3 is that it does have online play … which the 360 version does not. This option allows you to fight with other people from all over the world. And as a nice bonus, online play for the PS3 is free. Finding a match is rather easy, and the PS3 is lag free. Actually, every PS3 game mode for Round 3 is available for online play including the “Get in the Ring” mode.

In closing, the PS3 version of Fight Night Round 3 is certainly an upgrade over the Xbox 360 version in terms of graphic quality. The PS3's fighters and textures are a bit more detailed than the 360 version. In Fight Night Round 3 for PS3 you even have small details like the sweat rolling down a boxer's face … it is very cool! The PS3 version of Fight Night Round 3 looks the best of any boxing game yet. Fight Night Round 3 should be played on high definition set to get the best effect whether you’re playing on a PS3 or XBox 360.

The PS3 version of Fight Night Round doesn't have too many big differences with the Xbox 360 version. If you already have the 360 version, then you probably don’t need to purchase the PS3 version. If you have not yet bought Fight Night Round 3, then I would recommend that you buy the PS3 version simply to get the first person viewing mode.
