PS3 Review: Resistance Fall of Man
include("http://www.videogamz.com/ssi/rightcolumn.txt"); ?>
In the late fall of 2006, Sony released it highly anticipated PlayStation 3 game console. With the release of PS3, gamers favorite game was arguably "Resistance: Fall of Man" which is from the developers of the Ratchet & Clank series (Insomniac Games). Even though Insomniac Games have not been known for their "realistic" looking games in the past, then have always produced high quality games. Now, with "Resistance: Fall of Man" they have taken it to a new level of excellence.
The setting for "Resistance: Fall of Man" is an interesting one
No, its not a World War II battlefield setting; instead a strange alien species, the Chimera, has invaded Earth and is slowly taking over our beloved planet. The Chimera are nasty, hateful looking creatures who are determined to destroy whatever is in their path. The reason the Chimera are spreading so fast throughout Europe, is that the Chimera infect humans who become Chimera themselves after being infected.
Here is the scenario: your character is Nathan Hale who is an American Soldier that been assigned to support the defenses in the United Kingdom (Britain). Very little is known about the origin of the Chimera species, but as you go through the game you learn more about the Chimera. The game has a nice twist to it in that a female soldier who has encountered Hale in the UK does the narration and perspective of the War. She will give you much information on the situation. For the most part, "Resistance: Fall of Man" is well developed and quite entertaining.
The control scheme for "Resistance: Fall of Man" is your usual FPS (first person shooter) set-up. Analog sticks control your characters movement, while the other buttons let you fire, change weapons, and interact with your surroundings. The Sixaxis controller seems to have been implemented quite nicely as well. Occasionally in the game you will encounter Chimera creatures grabbing you
when this happens to you begin shaking the controller to break free. This can get quite intense during "Resistance: Fall of Man" when surrounded by those creatures.
The weapon choices in "Resistance: Fall of Man" seem to be fairly basic: pistols, shotguns, rifles, snipers, grenades, and the rocket launcher. The detail of the weapons is quite astounding, as well as the visual aspect when each weapon is fired. You will find a few special guns during the game as well as a few advanced weapons that you can unlock once you have finished the game.
One non-realistic feature in "Resistance: Fall of Man" is the manner in which weapon are carried. Most games today will only allow you to hold only a few weapons rather than holding an entire arsenal. "Resistance: Fear of Man" however, goes back to the roots of FPS gaming where you can pick up all guns you happen to come across. Some players think that this is a bad thing because they believe that any soldier carrying more then 3 heavy weapons is going to be slow and ineffective
especially in fast paced combat
However, many players find that carrying several different weapons is a good thing as it allows them to change weapons quickly for whatever situation arrases. So to them this small lack of realism is worth overlooking.
In terms of performance and overall appearance, "Resistance: Fall of Man" definitely gets a perfect score. The graphics and cut-scenes are very well done, as well as the explosive special effects and each individual character detail. The sound is exceptional quality as well, which makes every shot that you fire even that much more intense. "Resistance: Fall of Man", in the eyes of many gamers, is (so far) the best PS3 game available. If you have a PS3 gaming console, then you definitely want to get "Resistance: Fall of Man"!
