Did you know this about the Sony Playstation 3 Console?

After a long wait, Sony finally released its new Playstation 3 game console to the eagerly awaiting public in early winter 2006. Heralded as the most advanced gaming system in years, the PS3 game console was designed to provide gamers with a quite realistic gaming experience. The Playstation 3 implemented incredibly powerful modern day technology.

One of the amazing aspects of the PS3 game console is the incredible amount of ultra-high tech components that it uses. Arguably, when you contrast the Microsoft Xbox 360 and the Nintendo Wii to the Playstation 3, the PS3 game console looks like a supercomputer.

The PS3 uses a processor that features as many as eight cores for rapid computing power. While this may sound that amazing, keep in mind that most modern pcs only use one or two processor cores. Having said that, you really cannot fairly compare the two types of processors because the PS3’s processor is designed for doing simple calculations … meaning that it is nowhere near as powerful as a modern pc.

Sony incorporated a relatively high end chip for the PlayStation3’s graphics card … much like the chips used in modern gaming personal computers. However, similar to the PS3’s processor, the graphics chip is rather limited in what it can do. Case in point, just a few weeks before the Sony PS3 game console went on sale, a new video card for pc’s was released that completely surpassed the power of the PS3.

Having said all that, the Playstation 3 console is still quite an impressive piece of engineering with some excellent capabilities. It features a Blu-Ray disc player for high definition movies on Blu-Ray format. For six hundred dollars, you cannot find a standalone Blu-Ray disc player in any store, making the PS3 an exceptional deal (even if you don’t use it to play games).

Currently, the PS3 game console is the only gaming system that is able to play games in full 1080p high definition. The Xbox 360 and the Wii are limited to 720p/1080i (natively) and 480p respectively, so neither console currently is able to harness the power of full HD technology.
